Two Families Claim “13 Reasons Why” Triggered Their Daughters To Suicide

The Netflix ‘13 Reasons Why’ has come under some serious criticism, as several parents organizations and public schools are saying that the show is promoting teenagers to commit suicide. In Denver, Public Schools have even taken measure and asked parents to keep their children away from watching the show.

Recently, two families in the Bay Area said that they believe the popular Netflix show has triggered their teen girls to commit suicide.

Bella Herndon and Priscilla Chiu both 15-year-old girls have killed themselves in April, just 4 days apart after their parents said that their daughters watched the 13 episode drama released on March 31.

"There's no word that describes my contempt for the people that did this," Bella's father, John Herndon, told KTVU New Channel. "You can't convince me that they were trying to attract people's attention to the issue of suicide by showing a little girl killing herself. There's nothing positive about that."

The show is surrounded by high criticism and it is highly controversial series. It is based on Jay Asher’s 2007 Novel by the same title.

It is a story of a high school student, Hannah Baker who commits suicide and leaves behind 13 cassette tapes, each describing the story of a traumatic event that led her to kill herself.

The show has sparked criticism for glamorizing and glorifying teen suicide and raised concerns among families with teens who are at suicide risk due to bullying and depression.

Netflix defended its show in a statement to KTVU by saying: "We have heard from many views that '13 Reasons Why' has opened up a dialogue among parents, teens, schools and mental health advocates around the difficult topics depicted in the show."

"We wanted to do it in a way where it was honest, and we wanted to make something that it can hopefully help people because suicide should never ever be an option," shows producer said.
