Indian-origin designs vending machine that offers contraception pills

An Indian-origin student has designed a vending machine first of its kind that dispenses the morning after pill. The machine has been installed at the University of California, Davis.

The machine which is called “Wellness To Go” was installed in April in a study room at the University.

In addition to the morning after pill or Plan B, the machine also offers pregnancy tests, tampons, Advil and condoms.

The vending machine has received both praise and criticism, CNN affiliate 'KTXL' reported.

"The more skeptical and negativity I got from other people like 'oh, it is not going to happen,' kind of pushed me more," said Parteek Singh.

That is exactly why the economics major student turned his focus to public health, spending close to two years trying to bring the vending machine into being.

While some said that the machine promoted unsafe sex as it made getting the morning after pill cheaper and more convenient than buying condoms from a store, others felt that it is a great thing for women.

"This project will make Plan B and other health resources more accessible and affordable impacting 35,000 undergraduate and graduate students at UC Davis," Singh said.

"Since there is only one pharmacy that is open 24/7, students don't have the best access to emergency contraception and other over the counter medicine," he said.

"I feel like every college should have this," he added.

“It encourages responsibility; if you mess up you mess up. It’s better than waiting and see if you get pregnant and having an abortion,” said university spokesperson Stephanie Richardson.

When asked whether the school has a public position on the vending machine, the spokesperson had no response. But she did emphasize that the school senate worked with the administration and health care officials in implementing the program.
