Dev Patel the actor from the ‘Slum dog millionaire’ has become the third Indian-origin actor nominated for an Oscar and the only 13th Asian actor to have ever received this honor.
Dev Patel is the first Indian-origin actor to win a BAFTA for his role in ‘Lion.’ Now all eyes are upon Dev Patel as he is the only actor of Indian descendent nominated for the 89th Academy Awards, which will be held on Sunday, in Los Angeles
Ben Kingsley and Merle Oberon were the only two Indian-origins at the Oscars.
Yes, you’ve heard it right, many of you might not be know but. Kingsley is of Gujarati Indian lineage. And his real name is ‘Krishna Pandit Bhanji’. Kingsley racked up four nominations since 1982 for his brilliant acting.
Ben Kingsley won the Academy Award for his role in and as ‘Gandhi’, in the year 1983.
The other Indian-origin actor nominated for Oscar was Merle Oberon, who was a half Indian and half Sri Lankan.
She was born in Mumbai and performed in movies like The Scarlet Pimpernel’, ‘I Claudius’ and ‘Wuthering Heights’. Oberon earned her Oscar nomination for 1935’s movie ‘The Dark Angel’.
