U.S. Labor Secretary calls to Hile the salary of H1-B visa holders June 29, 2017 13:23

United States Labour Secretary, Alexander Acosta has made an appeal to hike the minimum salary of foreign workers on H-1B visas from the existing $60,000 to at least $80,000. He told a Congressional panel that it should address the problem of replacement of American workers by foreign workers coming to the United State on H-1B visas. “Congress has not updated that $60,000 threshold over time. If Congress were to update that simply for inflation, it would bring it up to well over $80,000 and many if not most of the situations like you have identified, would be eliminated because they would be below that $60,000 threshold,” Acosta told members of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labour, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies. “And so perhaps when that was enacted way back one, that was appropriate threshold, but I would encourage the Senator to look at that issue because I can’t imagine how one explains to the American worker that they have to train their foreign replacement and it has happened again and again and again,” Acosta said responding to a question from Senator Richard Durbin. He mentioned the name of a  pharmaceutical company that told 150 of its IT employee that there were being terminated. “They were terminated as long would get an extra benefit for their termination of one month of pay for every year of work if they agree to two things. First, they don’t say anything publicly about being fired. Secondly, they train their replacements. The replacements were H-1B visa holders from India,” Durbin alleged. He claimed that more than half the H-1B visas go to two major outsourcing companies in India. AMandeep

Cabinet approves the privatization of Air India June 29, 2017 07:21

The government of India on Wednesday approved the privatization of debt-ridden Air India and its five subsidiaries in a Cabinet meeting, the move is being called as one of the government's boldest reform moves. Indian Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley said: “in-principle approval” for Air India's divestment had been secured and now a panel headed by him would decide modalities of the sale. The Cabinet approval to for disinvestment followed the proposal presented by the Civil Aviation Ministry. The decision was taken after the government observed that the airlines could serve better in the hands of private companies. The airline is under a debt of more than Rs 52,000 and is currently flying on a Rs 30,000 crore bailout package by the former government under the UPA in 2012. "How much will be disinvested, by which process, its assets and debt, as also its hotel companies, will be deliberated," said the Mr. Jaitely. A panel will further decide whether to go for 100% stake sale in one go or divest gradually. A panel will decide whether to go for 100% stake sale in one go or divest gradually. The options given by the Department of investment and public asset management are 100%, 74%, and 51% stake sale in Air India. "Air India-specific alternative mechanism" headed by 'Finance Minister' will decide who can bid for the airline company. The department will see whether foreign airlines in a joint venture with Indian or foreign partners should be allowed to buy the airline company. According to current 'Foreign Direct Investment' (FDI) rules,  foreign entities can invest in Indian airlines, but puts a cap 49% ownership cap. The Tata Group is seen as a potential bidder for Air India, but it had unsuccessfully bid along with Singapore Airlines more than a decade back during Vajpayee government. Sources said that the panel will also take a decision on the treatment of Air India's unsustainable debt, giving off certain assets to another company, demerger and strategic disinvestment of three profit-making subsidiaries. AI Engineering Services Ltd, ground handling arm AI Transport Services Ltd, Alliance Air, and the low-cost AI Express. The fifth subsidiary, Hotel Corporation of India, runs Centaur Hotels and is AI's 50:50 JV with SATS Ltd of Singapore. The panel will decide to make Air India attractive enough for bidders, with its debt of Rs 52,000 crore. Currently, Air India has more than 110 aircraft in its fleet, including 43 wide-body aircraft, and flies to 41 international and 72 domestic destinations. The Indian government led by BJP feels that instead of pumping in thousands of crore rupees into the airline, Air India should be sold to private entities and the money saved thus be used in the social sector. Air India employees about 12,000 workers and the subsidiaries have more than  19,000.  While the pilots' union says it is not opposed to privatization, other employee unions are concerned of the divestment. The government says the future of the employees will be protected in the divestment process. Arun Jaitley asks Russian firms to “Make In India” AMandeep

Mumbai Serial Blasts Convict Mustafa Dossa Dies at Hospital June 28, 2017 13:15

Mumbai 93' serial blasts case convict, Mustafa Dossa died of cardiac arrest in Mumbai's city hospital today, weeks after a special court found him guilty of transporting arms to Mumbai for the blasts. The serial blasts resulted in killing more than 200 people. Earlier this morning, Dossa was initially admitted to the Arthur jail's hospital ward after he complained of chest pain and uncontrolled hypertension. He was later shifted to the JJ Hospital. He was one of the six convicts, including gangster Abu Salem to be found guilty by a special court on June 16 for the March 12, 1993, blasts. Just a day before he died in hospital, the CBI requested the special court to punish Dossa with capital punishment, arguing that his crime related to the blast was “more severe” than that of hanged convict Yakub Memon. Dossa was one of the main minds behind the terror attack and his contribution to the crime was the highest, the agency said. Prosecutors argued in the court that Dossa was the mastermind behind importing explosives in India and sending men to Pakistan for terror training. This month's special court hearing was the second leg of the trail in the serial blast case that involved seven accused by a special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act or TADA court in Mumbai. The TADA court convicted 6 accused and acquitted one. In the first part of the trail that ended about 10 years ago in 2007, the court had convicted 100 people. In 2015, Yakub Memon was hanged in connection with the same case. AMandeep

Ford To Launch GoBike in Bay Area Tomorrow June 28, 2017 07:05

Automobile giants 'Ford' is not just looking to expansion its four-wheeled machine, but also continues to experiment on two-wheeled mobility. The company will launch the nation's second-largest bike-share program in the Bay Area on Wednesday. The Ford GoBikes is another step in a series of new ventures from the automaker as it tries to reinvent itself and bridge the space between its image as a car maker and a potential technology and mobility powerhouse. Ford is partnering with Motivate to launch a fleet of Ford GoBike bicycles in San Francisco. The company expects to have about 3,500 bicycles in operation in the city by end of the summer. Ford also claims that by the end of 2018, the region will have 546 stations and 7,000 bikes. The bikes are designed for ease of use on the hills. They are made up of aluminum and have a wide gear range, puncture-resistant tires, and motion-activated lights. Riders can access the bikes through the FordPass app, which launched in 2016 and is used to help customers pay for parking, share their vehicles, start the car and lock the vehicle. Ford also plans to launch the bike-share program in September. The company is interested in finding out how to answer the increasingly varied transportation needs of city dwellers. The GoBike program launches just as it’s also expanding its Chariot shared commuter bus service. The work in that segment of the company is meant to grow a transportation ecosystem that Executive Chairman Bill Ford wants to foster. The bikes and the bus service would work in tandem with connected vehicles, autonomous cars, electric vehicles, ride-hailing services, bike-sharing and existing infrastructure like rails and buses. Just after a month after ransomware cyber attack that created a chaos around the world affecting more than 300,000 computers, a major cyber attack similar to the ransomware disrupted computers at Russia's biggest oil company, several banks in Ukraine. The ransomware also crippled several large corporations in Europe. India was among the nations affected by the cyber attack yesterday, as the ransomware led to the shutdown of operations of country's largest port Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust in Mumbai (JNPT). AP Moller-Maersk operates the Gateway Terminals India at JNPT, which has a capacity to handle 1.8 million standard container units. "We have been informed that the operations at Gateway Terminals India have come to a standstill because their systems are down. They are trying to work manually," a senior JNPT official told PTI tonight. The ransomware virus is only affecting the computers that run on Microsoft Windows, by encrypting the files in the hardware and then demanding $300 in Bitcoin account. The world's largest 'Operating System' (OS) provider said that the virus could spread through a flaw that was patched in a security update in March. "We are continuing to investigate and will take appropriate action to protect customers," a spokesman for the company said, adding that Microsoft antivirus software detects and removes it. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is monitoring the cyber attacks and coordinating with other affected nations. The agency advised victims not to pay the extortion, saying that doing so does not guarantee access will be restored. The White House National Security Council said, currently there is no risk to public safety. The U.S. Is investigating the cyber attack and determined to hold those responsible accountable. AMandeep
