More than 1 in 4 Californians are Immigrants: Census Data

About 27 percent of California population, more than one in four people are part of the state's foreign-born population, according to the United States Census data compiled by Lattice Publishing.

The findings, culled from the agency's 2012-16 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates, were used to determine the figure of immigrants who are living in each state, and from where are they emigrating. The data includes U.S. citizens and non-citizens.

The state with the highest degree immigrants in California, where more than a one-fourth of residents are non-native born within the U.S. borders or to at least one American citizen parent. California has more than 10.4 million immigrants, most of which are from Mexico, although 49 percent of those have become naturalized citizens of the country. Nevada, Texas, Illinois, Washington, and Arizona too draw a sizable Mexican population.

New York and New Jersey are as well abode to galore immigrants, with a little over one in five people being non-natives to the U.S. In New York, the most communal country of origin is the Dominican Republic, in New Jersey, Indian immigrants are most common.

Nationwide, 13.2 percent of the country's population are immigrants, of which the irresistible majority come from South America and Asia. Nearly half of those have become American citizens.

The interpretation of the data comes as protests are afoot nationwide against the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy of separating families seeking asylum at the border. House Republicans are continuing to hunt for a legislative solution to the issue as Trump seeks funding for a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico.
